Dr John Hoven
Mrs Mary Teo
Since 1960, Mary Teo had begun her lifelong affirmation with children as a primary school teacher. Her commitment and passion for teaching, especially in Mathematics,
saw her rose to the Head of Department of Mathematics and subsequently as Vice Principal in various schools. In 1988, she attained the position of principal and
was responsible for setting up a new school - Jun Yuan Primary. Under her careful guidance and sound leadership, the school that started off with 620 students grew to the present strength of enrolment exceeding 2000.
After more than 30 years as a frontline educator, she was posted to the Ministry of Education Special Schools Unit as an Inspector. When she eventually retired
in 2001 from public service, she headed a special school for special needs children and oversaw the implementation of various well-received programs.
It was this passion for teaching and commitment to educate children that constantly motivated her to contribute actively in the education sector for more than 40 years. Her vast experience in various roles from teaching and planning to managing and directing saw her work with a whole spectrum of children with
different learning difficulties and strengths.
Dr John Hoven
Dr. Hoven is an educational reform activist. Since 1991 he has been co-president of the Gifted and Talented Association (GTA) of Montgomery County,
Maryland. His uncompromising efforts to raise educational opportunities for all children have won him much admiration and respect from his opponents as well
as his supporters.
His primary interest in education reform is curriculum standards -- especially mathematics, in order to prepare students for the broad range of careers
that require a solid background in mathematics.
Dr. Hoven was instrumental in getting the Singapore Math textbooks piloted in his school district in Montgomery County, Maryland. He especially admires the
Singapore Math curriculum because it emphasizes the computational skills needed for algebra and beyond, and because it teaches students a simple, powerful
strategy for solving hard problems. He pointed out that Singapore Math problems for grades 5 and 6 are comparable to those on Maryland's high school Algebra
exam, and to the "hard" 8th grade problems on the U.S. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exam. (See
